St. Joseph’s Celtics CYO basketball teams’ regular season closes with a hard-fought loss and team building with Drew University.
The St. Joseph’s Pee Wee Blue Meola team lost a heartbreaker to St. Agnes Gold on Sunday afternoon in overtime 18-17. It was by far the team’s best effort defensively and under the boards. The seven players available for the game combined for a season high 44 rebounds. St. Agnes’ perennially strong offense jumped to a quick 8-1 lead in the first quarter. But the Celtics completely shut them down in the second quarter and went into the half down 8-3. St. Joseph’s had a strong third quarter with eight points, and a fourth quarter with six, finishing out regulation in a 17 – 1 7 tie. The four-minute overtime was a hard-fought battle; the only point scored was a foul shot with less than a minute left.
John Pirone had a double double with ten points and thirteen rebounds. Four of his points were from the foul line. Henry Aaron was at point for most of the game and ran a creative and strong offense. Aaron scored five points, all from the foul line, and had four rebounds and two steals. Liam Haley scored the balance two points and was a monster under the boards with ten rebounds. Cian O’Connor and Justin DeVomecourt were relentless on defense and had a combined eleven rebounds. Lukas Alexander and John Wisniewski (who lent his skills from the other St. Joe’s team) played well on both ends of the court and had three rebounds each.
St. Joseph’s JV Girls Red team finished the regular season with a winning 8-4 record. The team is excited to move into the playoffs and to make a run for the championship. On Feb. 11, the JV Girls attended the Drew University women’s basketball game against Moravian. They watched Drew play from behind the bench and had a post game meet and greet with the team. The event was great team building for all sides.
