Huntar Hayes is a ten-year-old student at Jefferson Elementary School in Maplewood who is fighting Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a form of blood cancer. She is in need of a bone marrow transplant.
Huntar is African-American, which presents an additional complication because African-Americans currently comprise only 7% of the national registry of bone marrow donors — making it extremely difficult for her to find a matching donor.
Blazin Fitness Studios in West Orange, in partnership with Delete Blood Cancer, is hosting a Bone Marrow Donor Drive on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 12-4 p.m. to help Huntar and others fighting blood cancer to find a match.
All that is required is a quick cheek swab, and filling out a registration form.
If you can’t make the drive, you can register online at Delete Blood Cancer’s website.
