Residents of Courter Avenue in Maplewood recently became the latest in a growing roster of folks across the nation to take on the ALS Awareness “Ice Bucket Challenge.”
The Ice Bucket Challenge — wherein people dump (or have dumped) a bucket of ice cold water on their heads — was launched by the ALS Association to raise money and awareness for fighting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a severely debilitating and often deadly condition better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Folks are asked to complete the challenge or to donate money to the ALS Association — although many people seem to be doing both. So far, the ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received $4 million in donations (compared to $1.12 million during the same time period last year), according to the association’s website.
NJ Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker are two of the latest locals to have mastered the challenge, according to CBS News, joining numerous celebrities and media personalities including Jimmy Fallon, Matt Lauer, Justin Timberlake, Ethel Kennedy and Mark Zuckerberg, to name a few.
The Courter Avenue residents posted a video of their challenge on YouTube and Facebook and challenged other neighbors, Maplewood Township Committee members and Tuscan Elementary School teachers and staff.
Will the TC members and Tuscan teachers rise to the occasion? What about their South Orange counterparts in government and the school district?
