The following is from ‘Take the Cake’:
When a local charity put out the word that they were hosting a prom for some deserving teens and needed dresses, they never imagined the tremendous response they would receive. Take the Cake of Maplewood-South Orange throws birthday parties for area kids who wouldn’t otherwise be able to celebrate them and, in June, hosted an unforgettable prom night for the kids at Covenant House of Newark. Covenant House provides loving care and vital services to homeless, abandoned, abused, trafficked and exploited youth. Thanks to the incredible outpouring of support from our local community and beyond, they collected hundreds of beautiful gowns for these special youths.
“The girls had many, many dresses, shoes and jewelry to choose from so they could select an outfit they truly loved,” said Take the Cake Co-Director Janine Territo, “And, on prom night they looked absolutely gorgeous! We are so grateful to everyone who donated!”
Now that the prom is over, Take The Cake will be holding a dress sale fundraiser with the extra dresses, shoes and accessories they received. All proceeds will directly benefit Covenant House New Jersey and Take the Cake. “With the funds, we will be able to host more parties for more kids in need,” says Territo.
The sale will be held July 25th and 26th from 1 to 4 pm at DeHart Community Center, located at 120 Burnett Avenue, Maplewood. All styles and sizes of dresses will be available at bargain prices (most dresses only $10-25!). Long and short, summer dresses and formal gowns. Some even new with tags. Others only gently worn. So stop by and find yourself that special little number and support a great cause!
About Covenant House New Jersey
In 1989, Covenant House began its work in New Jersey by providing basic services to homeless youth on the streets of Newark and Atlantic City. Over the past 25 years, Covenant House New Jersey has grown by creating more services and enhancing the quality of those services. The focus is always on meeting the needs of New Jersey homeless youth — needs that never stop growing.
Most nights Covenant House New Jersey gives 132 homeless adolescents and 19 of their babies throughout the state a safe and caring place to live in North and South Jersey.
Another dozen also may be found nightly by our outreach teams on the street or walk through the doors of our Crisis Centers for the first time.
