The following is from Edward Starzynski, coach for Maplewood Recreation Basketball:
As part of an initiative to get more girls interested in basketball, the Maplewood Recreation Department has been offering free skills clinics for all girls in grades 3-8.
Wednesday night’s clinic was especially unique because the girls got an opportunity to work with coaches and players from the Seton Hall Women’s basketball team.
The Seton Hall Pirates, coming off of a season that saw them win the Big East Championship, and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years, worked with the girls teaching different skills such as ball handling, shooting, passing and defense.
More than 50 Maplewood-South Orange girls participated in the clinic that spanned over two hours. Each girl then got an opportunity to play some games such as “knockout” and “horse” with the players. The next clinic will be on Wednesday, October 14, and will be run by a guest coach to be announced within the coming weeks.
