Real Simple magazine June issue featuring Julie Pauly

Local baker Julie Pauly of The Able Baker in Maplewood is once again in the news, this time featured in the June issue of Real Simple magazine.

The piece, ‘A Life in Full,’ is on the magazine’s back page and chronicles how Pauly reinvented herself after losing her retail job in 2009. It shows a day in her life: at work in the bakery, chatting with customers, sharing a bite at Arturo’s with husband Thomas, and at home in her kitchen on one of her rare days off.

Under the sidebar ‘How Julie Pulled Off a Midlife Career Change,’ Pauly says, “When I started out, every day was a mistake waiting to happen. I made sure to learn from them.”

(A tidbit from the article: The Able Baker’s biggest sellers are scones — no surprise there — and gluten-free banana bread.)

“I enjoy the hands-on nature of what I do,” Pauly says in the magazine. “And it’s very casual. If I need to hold a meeting, it’s a conversation over coffee, leaning against the counter.”

The 51-year-old mother of two notes that although she works every Saturday, she relishes the flexibility she didn’t have with other jobs. “I can step out for errands, plus either Thomas or I can be home with the kids after school.”

Pauly told The Village Green that Real Simple learned about her after a local Able Baker fan tipped them off. The magazine contacted her in the fall and shot the photos in April.

The June issue is available on newsstands now.
