Columbia High School senior and Maplewood resident Olivia Smith has committed to Oberlin College in Ohio where she will study science and other subjects and play NCAA Division III women’s soccer.

Smith, a defender, was part of the CHS Girls Varsity Soccer Team that won the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division championship last fall.

Smith, whose mother Sandy Smith is a teacher at Seth Boyden School, told the News-Record that academics led her to choose Oberlin as much as athletics: “Both students and professors were excited to talk to me about their interests. Oberlin will satisfy my love of science along with letting me expand my studies in other areas such as English.”

CHS Girls Soccer Head Coach Ashley Corino credited Smith’s hard work, leadership skills and, yes, scholarship, for setting her apart: “She was one of the most influential players in our program on and off the field,” Corino told the News-Record. “Off the field, she is a brilliant student and one of the most genuine young women. She will be an asset to any team she is on and I will truly miss having her on mine.”
