The Township of Maplewood has officially given notice to its Animal Control Officer that she is being let go, according to Township Administrator Joseph Manning.

Manning confirmed that Debbie Hadu, who had mounted a grassroots campaign to keep her job, was given 30 days notice on Wednesday.

Hadu made her case that the town should retain her as an Animal Control Officer at an emotional and occasionally raucous Township Committee meeting Tuesday night, when a large number of supporters asked officials to keep her on.

At the meeting, the committee voted 4-1 to enter into a full-service contract with the Associated Humane Society of Newark to provide the township’s sheltering and animal control needs. The contract, which ends Dec. 31, 2015, has a clause stipulating that either the town or the AHS can terminate the agreement at any time after providing 60 days notice. The town will pay the AHS $41,802.25, to be paid on a monthly, prorated basis.

The ordinance and the contract can be found attached here as PDFs.
