Critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Dar Williams returns to the SOPAC (South Orange Performing Arts Center) stage in South Orange on Thursday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m. in support of her 2015 album Emerald. Her deeply personal music speaks to her thoughtful and sensitive approach to themes of gender roles, religion, the turbulence of adolescence and more.

An outspoken environmentalist, Williams has performed with luminaries Joan Baez, The Indigo Girls, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, John Prine and other artists prominent in modern folk music. Lucy Wainwright Roche will open for Ms. Williams. Tickets are $30-$45 and can be purchased online at www.SOPACnow.org, or by calling the box office at (973) 313-2787.

Ms. Williams has enjoyed a remarkable career which began when Joan Baez, an early fan of her music, took her out on the road and recorded several of her songs. In 1995, two years after self-releasing The Honesty Room, she signed with Razor & Tie Entertainment, beginning a long and mutually beneficial relationship. Ms. Williams has released six studio albums and continues to tour around the country. She is a frequent performer at folk festivals and has toured with such artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffin, Ani DiFranco, The Nields, Shawn Colvin, Girlyman, and Catie Curtis.

Hendrik Hertzberg of The New Yorker has described her as “One of America’s very best singer-songwriters.” At the core of Dar Williams’ work is a belief in the innate ability of people to make a better world, the product of countless observations in her travel and conversations with her fans.

Ms. Roche has released three studio albums. In addition, Ms. Roche has opened for the Indigo Girls and has performed with Neko Case on the Late Show With David Letterman. Her song “Snare Drum” won the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards for best Folk/Singer-Songwriter Song.

SOPAC programs are made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) is a 501(c)(3)charitable organization.
