The South Orange Village Center Alliance has been talking up its brand-new event coming Sunday, September 21 — PlayDay South Orange.

But there are a number of great events happening in South Orange that weekend. In fact, there are so many events that SOVCA has now expanded its marketing and has dubbed Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21 as “Stay and Play Weekend.”

Clearly, there will be no reason to leave South Orange that weekend (well, maybe you’ll want to visit the Maplewood Wellness Fair and enjoy the finale of Millburn’s Restaurant Week).

Here’s a breakdown of what’s in store on September 20th and 21st:

Saturday, Sept. 20

Newstead 5K. The 12th annual Newstead 5K will raise money for the Achieve Foundation to support the South Orange-Maplewood public schools. Residents from all over South Orange, Maplewood and beyond will run or walk around the beautiful streets of Newstead for a great cause. Race time is 9 a.m. More information on registration and sponsorship can be found here.

Historic Baseball Game.  A 19th-century-style baseball game, featuring old-time uniforms and rules, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, 12:00 p.m. at Cameron Field, the South Orange baseball field where Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig once played (read more about it here). South Orange Recreation and the South Orange Historic Preservation Commission are presenting the event, billed as “part game, part show, part history lesson and all fun.”

Eaglemania. After a day of living Life in the Fast Lane, Take it Easy at SOPAC at 8:00 p.m. to hear the world’s greatest Eagles tribute band, Eaglemania! It will definitely be One of These Nights! More information can be found here.

Sunday, Sept. 21st

Newcomer’s Day. If you’re new to town, or even if you’ve been here awhile but you would like to meet some long-time neighbors, Village leaders and representatives of Village and community volunteer groups, come to the South Orange Public Library at 65 Scotland Road for Newcomer’s Day. Starting at 1:00 p.m.Village President Alex Torpey will give a general welcome and department heads will talk about what’s new in the Village. After the event, come to PlayDay and learn more about local organizations by visiting the PlayDay Community Area.

In-Site Exhibition. IN-SITE: the Intersection of Art and Architecture, is presented by the Lennie Pierro Memorial Arts Foundation and Pierro Gallery of South Orange. Villagers can meet the artists at a 3 p.m. reception near the Tony Smith sculpture, TAU, in Meadowland Park. A cake honoring Smith’s birthday will be served. IN-SITE explores the connections between art and architecture, while broadly nodding to the work and principles of Tony Smith, a world-renowned artist and native of South Orange whose art focuses on space and form.

PlayDay South Orange

PlayDay South Orange. From 1:00-6:00 PM on Sunday, Sept. 21. “The greatest day of play to ever hit South Orange” is a family-oriented event that will include inflatables, health & fitness activities, sports, classic games, live music, art, and contests. Hopscotch, basketball, chess, min-golf, jump rope and Connect 4 are already lined up, with more to come. The street will be closed to traffic — making it plenty safe and fun.
