Though I made it through an elementary school Valentine’s Day without giving into sugar, it was the meal that blew my diet. The South Orange Health & Fitness Challenge (#SOFit15) has taught me to replace sweet rewards for a hard day with a short nap, Friday manicure, or walk around the block. I am working on this effort, especially with Thursday’s Weigh-In ahead. I decided to eat extravagantly on the holiday itself.
Laura Nichols of the Blue Plate Special on Irvington Avenue in South Orange offered a prix-fixe take-out menu for Valentine’s Day. I ordered pecan-encrusted salmon, duck breast, tenderloin steak and three of Laura’s lush salads. All the meals included roasted veggies, which are no challenge to the diet, but also mashed potatoes and corn bread. I bought good wine and made tiny brownies for dessert.
Extravagant? Yes, indeed. Delicious? Even more so.
Not only do I feel that it’s fine to take a day off from a diet, but knowing I had a wonderful ahead, meant I was able to smile past the munchkins, cookies, and endless packets of FunDip around school on Friday.
I was lucky enough to come home from school with gifts of sweets and treats. My family has already eaten well. I finished my extravagant meal with one perfect Belgian chocolate, just as satisfying as I hoped.
Stay tuned….our Weigh-In is Thursday at the Baird Center.
