Episcopal Pilgrimage

An 80-mile pilgrimage across New Jersey organized by the Episcopal Diocese of Newark will be walking through Maplewood and South Orange next Friday, July 29 and will stop at St. George’s in Maplewood and St. Andrew & Holy Communion in South Orange.

The pilgrimage, which starts at the Delaware River on July 25 and ends in Hoboken on the Hudson River on July 30, will be led by Bishop Mark Beckwith, a South Orange resident.

Next week Bishop Mark Beckwith and members of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, which spans the northern third of New Jersey, will embark on an ambitious, modern-day pilgrimage: walking across the entire diocese, starting from the Delaware River in Belvidere on Monday, July 25, and concluding their 80-plus mile journey at the Hudson River in Hoboken on Saturday, July 30.

“God is very active in northern New Jersey,” said Bishop Beckwith, “and by walking, looking and listening we are going to discover a fresh perspective on what God is up to – and new ways that we can join God’s work.”

Approximately 20 people have signed up to join Bishop Beckwith for the entire journey. Another 35 or so people will join them for some portion of the walk. Still others will participate by supporting the pilgrims, providing meals and acting as worship leaders and other roles.

The Pilgrims will meet by 7:30 AM on Monday, July 25 at St. Mary’s Church, 408 Third Street, Belvidere, NJ 07823. They will then proceed to Water Street by the Delaware River for a brief service, and from there commence the pilgrimage. The Pilgrims will be easily recognizable by their “safety orange” T-shirts bearing the image shown above.

Each day, the Pilgrims will walk 10-17 miles to the evening’s host site. Three Episcopal churches and two Episcopal-related organizations are serving as the five overnight host sites. Each evening the Pilgrims will celebrate a Community Eucharist, outdoors if weather permits, to which all members of the community are invited.

The pilgrimage will conclude on Saturday, July 30 at Pier A Park in Hoboken.
