With Hurricane Joaquin hovering above the Bahamas and growing in strength as of Wednesday afternoon, some of us here in New Jersey are wondering when exactly we should start freaking out.
Most storm models send Joaquin our way. In fact, New Jersey is right in the center of the “Cone of Uncertainty” according to weather.com, which emphasized the “uncertainty” with this caveat: “complicated atmospheric patterns makes its future track – including any potential landfall on the U.S. East Coast – extremely difficult to forecast.”
Nonetheless, memories of Superstorm Sandy, which punched into our state nearly three years ago causing ongoing rebuilding and repercussions, is already sending some locals off to buy canned goods, medicine, water, flashlights, fuel, cash, and generators.
The Asbury Park Press is reporting that shore communities are already preparing for potential record flooding related to the storm.
Also, South Orange’s Seton Village Committee has rescheduled its Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival to Wednesday, October 7 due to a forecast of rain and wind for Friday ahead of the hurricane. (Accuweather is currently predicting a “possible” landfall somewhere between North Carolina and southern New Jersey on Sunday.)
Stay tuned for more updates and potential cancellations.
