The Clinton School community and SOMA Bike Bus community are raising funds to help support a local dad and his family as he recovers from a hit-and-run last week.

On Feb. 25, John Speck was cycling on Parker Avenue in Maplewood when he was struck by a vehicle and dragged 500 feet. He was transported to University Trauma Center in Newark. Police continue to look for the vehicle and operator. Those with information are asked to contact Det. Isetts @ 973-761-7925 or [email protected].

Speck is the leader of the Clinton Bike Bus, part of a growing network of parents shepherding elementary students to school on bikes throughout South Orange and Maplewood. Speck was not riding as part of the bike bus when he was struck last Wednesday evening.

“John Speck is someone who has quietly and consistently shown up for the people in his life with generosity, humor, and a deep sense of care,” reads the GoFundMe. “If you know John (or have seen him biking around SOMA) you know how much he values community, connection, and being there when it matters most. He is, first and foremost, a devoted husband and father to two girls, as well as a talented musician, a badass leader of the Clinton Bike Bus, an avid gardener, and a thoughtful coder. John has built a life rooted in care: for his family, for his neighbors, and for the world around him. After a horrific bike crash, he and his family are now facing an incredibly difficult moment. We’ve created this page to help ease the financial burden ahead and to surround them with the same kind of support and community that John has so freely given to others.”
