Community Garden season permits are issued by the Township of South Orange Village for the use of individual Garden Plots for one season. Garden plot registration is limited to South Orange residents, one per household. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and must be done in person at the Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs located at the Baird, 5 Mead Street. Proof of residency is required. Registration begins December 1, 2016 at 9:00 am and will end when all plots are licensed. The 2017 Garden Season Permit fee is $70.
The South Orange Community Garden is located in a small portion of Riverside Park, located on West Third Street near Church Street, adjacent to the west bank of the Rahway River’s east branch. The garden consists of 48 raised-bed plots, each measuring 4′ x 12′. The garden operates from April through October , 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, or dawn to dusk, whichever is more restrictive.
The South Orange Community Garden is dedicated to supporting and operating a recreational, organic community garden for the residents of South Orange for the promotion and education of organic, sustainable, ornamental and edible plant culture. The Garden is run by the South Orange Community Garden Group (SOCGG) comprised of all registered gardeners. SOCGG is governed by an elected, volunteer Executive Committee, based on By-laws and Operating Rules & Regulations. Gardeners will receive these documents via email after registering for the South Orange Community Garden.
