The following is from the South Orange Police Department.

Residents are to be reminded that several frauds and attempts at same have been continuing throughout our jurisdiction and surrounding jurisdictions as well. These frauds are being largely perpetrated upon the elderly and often request funds to get a loved one or themselves out of trouble regarding a specific issue that does NOT exist. Examples are out of state or out of country bail money needed for a family member, IRS funds that must be paid, outstanding utility bills or other bills etc. These frauds are predominately being generated via the phone and in some rare instances an individual may physically appear at a target victim’s residence. Please take a moment to remind your family members both young and old that such crimes and attempts to commit such crimes are continuing and that in NO INSTANCES should these criminals be forwarded any funds and or personal information. In all such attempts, the South Orange Police Department is to be notified immediately in order to both document and investigate the crime or attempt thereof.
