From the South Orange-Maplewood School District:

On October 19, Jefferson School participated The Read Across the Globe initiative, and it was a rewarding experience for everyone involved. The Points of Light Organization partnered with The Guinness Book of World Records to promote the importance of literacy and volunteerism. Jefferson School was part of this world-wide event, to break the record of reading to more than 30,000 children at the same time in a 24 hour period.

Parents and grandparents, along with district staff and supervisors read to our 22 classes, and took pictures and video to document this exciting day. Teachers acted as witnesses and stewards, to maintain accuracy when reporting back to Guinness.

Points of Light provided the official book to read for the event, entitled Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. This inspiring book promotes the importance of volunteering in one’s community and what it means to have a vision and motivate others. Jefferson students enjoyed listening to this story, and taking part in serving their community by donating books to local charities. Jefferson parent, Linda Floyd organized book donations and collected over 1,000 books. The results from The Guinness Book of World Records are still being determined. Careful examination of pictures the video is required in order to be considered, and we are patiently awaiting the results.
