Mazzocchi: Lawson-Muhammad Should ‘Deeply Reflect,’ Consider Resigning

To the Editor:

As I have stated before, I knew nothing about the incident involving [South Orange-Maplewood BOE member Stephanie] Lawson-Muhammad until I learned about it from a private citizen.  I remain concerned that some Board members knew about this and not others.

I believe sunlight is the best disinfectant.  In an era of transparency, I have strong objections to how BOE President Elizabeth Baker handled this matter.  Unfortunately, I’m not able to expound upon this further.

I echo Board member Madhu Pai’s and Johanna Wright’s assertions that Ms. Lawson-Muhammad should deeply reflect on her poor behavior and her ability to carry out her duties effectively as a member of the BOE. While it is my personal belief it is in the best interest of our school community that Ms. Lawson-Muhammad resign as a member of the BOE so we may put this whole unfortunate incident behind us and focus our attention where it needs to be – serving the students of our community – I fully recognize that it is her decision and hers alone to make.

The thoughts expressed in this statement are those of an individual, and do not reflect the thoughts of the full Board of Education.
