The victim who was struck and killed by a NJ Transit train on the tracks west of South Orange station on Wednesday, was 21-year-old Seton Hall University student Joseph G. Debari of Bridgewater, NJ.
A NJ Transit representative confirmed his identity today.
Per The Setonian, Debari’s death was announced to the Seton Hall community in a message from Interim President Dr. Katia Passerini last night, but no cause was given.
According to The Setonian, DeBari was a junior accounting major in the Stillman School of Business.
“There are no adequate words to express the sorrow we feel at the death of one of our own community members,” Passerini wrote, “Especially a student in the prime of life. The depth of this loss affects all of us immensely and personally.”
On Wednesday NJ Transit reported, at “approximately 7:37 p.m. … a train not in passenger service that was being moved eastbound on the Morris & Essex Line struck and fatally injured an adult male pedestrian west of South Orange station. There were no customers on board. No injuries were reported to the crew. … New Jersey Transit Police are on scene leading the investigation.”
