One of South Orange Middle School (SOMS) Principal Joseph Uglialoro’s main goals for the 2014-15 school year is to improve and enhance communication with parents and families. He wants to keep the community informed about important events and updates, “and to share the fantastic and inspiring learning that is happening in your child’s classrooms,” as he shared in a letter sent to parents.

To that end, he is launching the use of Remind, a free service that will enable him to send one-way messages to parents’ phones or email addresses. The service keeps phone numbers and personal contact information private, and recipients cannot reply to messages.

SOMS teachers will be using the service as well to send messages to students about homework assignments, field trip updates, schedule changes, and more. Students will provide their names, email addresses and phone numbers, but information will never be shared and will remain private. Parents may opt to not have their child participate. See Remind’s privacy policy here.

Uglialoro told parents at the 6th grade Transition Program on Thursday that 90 people had already signed up for the service; as he spoke and explained how to enroll, dozens more sign-ups started popping up.

Signing up is simple. Here are three different ways to do it:

  • Download the Remind app for free; then enter the class code: @southor
  • Visit this link: www.remind.com/join/southor
  • Join via SMS by entering this number: (217) 689-0162 and sending this message: @southor.
