St. Rose of Lima Academy Student/South Orange Resident Raises Money for Pediatric Cancer Research
St. Baldrick’s is a national charity that raises money for pediatric cancer research by enlisting volunteers to raise money by shaving their heads. As the name suggests, the charity started at a Saint Patrick’s Day event in New York about 20 years ago as a way for those more fortunate to help increase survival rates for children suffering from cancer. Volunteer “shavees” request donations from their family and community to sponsor them.
At a local level, each September a family fun day is held in the Shillelagh Club in West Orange where the volunteers have their hair cut and supporters have an opportunity to provide additional sponsorship at the main event, this year’s event took place on September 15th.
Patrick went to the St. Baldrick’s event last year with his father & twin brother and decided that day he wanted to help children with cancer. He had been talking about doing this all year & was excited when the day finally arrived.
To raise awareness he dyed his hair green shortly before the event, this gave him the opportunity to explain what he was doing for this truly worthy cause.
Patrick set out to raise $1,000 for childhood cancer research. He has so far raised just over $3,000 and is hoping to raise some additional support before his hair grows back!
