Vicky Johnson says her granddaughter was “traumatized” by her experience at Columbia High School, and is worried that special ed students get “lost between the cracks.”

Bing said revamping math is a “major change” and noted “the resources and curriculum we were using were fine 10 years ago but are not fine for students now.”

“We stress with our freshmen that success really starts this year,” said Principal Frank Sanchez. “And the way to succeed is to find your people, engage, be in a club.”

Math scores for Black and economically disadvantaged students ticked up, but there is “still a lot of work to do,” said Asst. Supt. of Curriculum Ann Bodnar. Also, 70% of students with an IEP did not meet proficiency standards.

The technology often used at concerts will be coming to a SOMA school or two near you this year.

The news comes as some CHS parents are reporting issues with students’ schedules.

Students can expect to see some improvements to some buildings this fall, with more to come, says new Supt. Jason Bing.
