A representative from Appraisal Systems, Inc. will update Maplewood property owners on why the reassessment conducted by the company has been delayed.
The ASI rep will appear at the Maplewood Township Committee’s meeting Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m., according to Mayor Vic DeLuca.
[Also on the agenda is further discussion of designating Maplewood a “Sanctuary Community.”
In addition, the Democratic Party members of the Maplewood Township Committee will meet in a political caucus at the conclusion of Tuesday’s meeting and will discuss Township Committee appointments for 2017. The political caucus is open to the public and will be televised.

Letters informing property owners of the new valuations of their properties were originally supposed to be mailed on or around December 1; however, because of unspecified delays ASI will begin mailing letters over the next couple of weeks.
“The reassessment firm notified the Township today (Dec. 1st) that the letters will not start going out until next week and will take up to two weeks to complete,” wrote DeLuca on the Village Green News & Views Facebook group. “The Township Committee has requested the firm’s principal attend its December 6th meeting to explain why there is a delay.”
DeLuca added, “One item we will ask about is the time available for informal reviews by the firm. We also will ask the Tax Board to consider the delay and how that might impact the deadline for formal appeals, which is now May 1, 2017.”
DeLuca, as well as a South Orange administration representative and property tax experts, also will be at a forum on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at The Woodland, sponsored by Vanessa Pollock Realty. That meeting is free and open to the public.
South Orange property owners received their letters at the beginning of November.
