The South Orange Health and Fitness Challenge has begun. More than 100 of the 125 participants weigh-in on Thursday night at the Baird Center. I was one of them, though it took a good pep talk to get me there. I simply didn’t want to know how much I weigh.
Now, when it comes to my children and other kids I know, I say, “Facts are friendly.” That means that you can’t go forward unless you know where you are — whether in spelling test scores, learning the times table, or weight loss. I thought hard about friendly facts and went to Baird to find out my weight.
Done fast…but the numbers weren’t as friendly as I hoped. I’m now in this to get fit and to lose a few.
As part of community-building, the group will gather for a healthy meal at Above on Thursday, February 5th at 7PM. (There is a $25 charge, payable in cash at the door.) Included: A great salad buffet, choice of salmon or chicken and a healthy cheesecake dessert. Send an email to SouthOrangeFitness@gmail.com if you plan to attend.) I am eager to meet my fellow participants and to taste — hey, I’m a skeptic — “healthy” cheesecake.
Trustee Sheena Collum has established a Facebook group for Challenge members. Lots of conversations are going on there about what to eat and where to run on these cold days. And here’s a tip: according to one participants posting online, roasted seaweed has no calories to speak of. Hmm…I’d call that a friendly fact.
