Despite the rain, 800 students, administrators and teachers took to the streets of Maplewood Village this morning for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Silent Peace March.
Some of the students’ signs suffered from the pelting rain, but the messages still came through. One MLK quote that appeared on a number of signs was: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
The MMS community was joined this year by Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Ficarra, who marched alongside the students in the rain. Acting Police Chief Jim DeVaul was also present, directing officers who closed streets to ensure the march could proceed safely.
One change this year: After returning to the school, the MMS Select Chorus was set to sing “We Shall Overcome.” Village Green was fortunate enough to catch the chorus, led by director Regina Bradshaw, rehearsing on Baker Street before the beginning of the march.
