NJ-11 Dem Primary Too Close to Call, With Mejia in Lead

Mejia won South Orange and Maplewood handily, with Malinowski in second, and Tahesha Way and Brendan Gill in distant 3rd and 4th place, respectively.

The Democratic primary for the special election to replace Gov. Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District is too close to call as of 11 p.m. EST.

After polls closed at 8 p.m. on Feb. 5, former NJ-7 Congressman Tom Malinowski leapt into the lead, but as the evening wore on, Analilia Mejia, a former national political advisor for Senator Bernie Sanders, surged to take a narrow lead.

With 91.3% of expected votes counted, Analilia Mejia was in first place, 486 votes ahead of Tom Malinowski.

  • Mejia: 17,647 (28.8%)
  • Malinowski: 17,161 (28.0%)
  • Tahesha Way: 10,696 (17.4%)

Results from the Essex County Clerk’s website showed the numbers totaling the following for Maplewood and South Orange (all districts reporting but not including all VBM — Vote By Mail — or provisional ballots):

Maplewood:

  1. Mejia 1,934
  2. Malinowski 1,421
  3. Way 804
  4. Brendan Gill 408

South Orange:

  1. Mejia 1,252
  2. Malinowski 1,033
  3. Way 584
  4. Gill 261

Maplewood and South Orange combined:

  1. Mejia 3,186
  2. Malinowski 2,454
  3. Way 1,388
  4. Gill 669
