At the “Scribbles & Scratches” event at The Woodland on Sept. 14, locals can learn “how an idea for a children’s book can become a timeless favorite, and how authors and illustrators work together to create a book that lives off of the page.”

Studio B will be bringing together celebrated storybook creators who will discuss the process — from an idea scribbled down on a napkin, to the book a child wants to read over and over and over.

“The event will really start from scratch,” says Studio B honcho Marcy Thompson. “Lots of Q&A, lots of inside information about the process.”

Local authors participating include Hallie Durand, Richard Morris and Julie Burstein. Durand is the author of the Dessert First series, Morris is the author of Bye Bye Baby and This is a Moose, and Burstein is the creator of Studio 360 for NPR, and author of Spark: How Creativity Works.

Also on the schedule: Chris Weyant and Anna Kang, author and illustrator team of You Are (Not) Small, and David Small, Caldecott Medal-winning author and illustrator of over 40 books for children, as well as the New York Times Bestselling, National Book Award Finalist Stitches, a graphic memoir.

Finally — and mysteriously — there will also be an appearance by “the real Mrs. Gray.”

The event starts at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 14. Cost is $10. Purchase tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com. The Woodland is located at 60 Woodland Road in Maplewood, NJ.
