Mara’s Café & Bakery, a casual, family-friendly café at 9 West South Orange Avenue in the new Gateway apartment building in South Orange, is in the final phases of construction.
Will and Alyse Eisenstein, the franchise owners, are watching the kitchen and counter finishes be completed. The customized, decorative reclaimed wood accents on the dessert and gelato cases reflect the artistic flavor of South Orange. The display cases will be filled with Mara’s delectable dessert and Mara’s will be open for business by the end of April.
Mara’s Café & Bakery has been recognized regionally and in New Jersey as the Best Coffeehouse, and has won numerous awards for its cheesecake, gelato, cupcakes, cannoli, sandwiches and more. The franchise will serve delectable desserts along with fresh roasted coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner in a relaxing atmosphere. All meals will be made fresh to order for dine-in, pick-up and/or catering. Desserts will be available by the individual serving or whole cake/pies. Plentiful indoor and patio seating is planned.

Mara’s was established in 1984 when Mara and Glenn Magley created a line of desserts and coffee products. In 2004 Mara’s Café & Bakery in Denville was opened and the product lines expanded to include soups, sandwiches, salads, quiches and handcrafted gelato. The menu has grown to include seasonal specials and freshly roasted coffee beans.

The franchise program, developed with the help of the Chicago based iFranchise Group and the Philadelphia based law firm of Fisher Zucker, LLC, is growing in the New Jersey area. “Mara’s Café & Bakery is expanding methodically,” according to Ian. “Our goal is to ensure the success of each franchisee by taking a conservative expansion approach.”
