9th Annual Maplewood Green Day Returns to Memorial Park October 14

WHERE: Memorial Park between Dunnell Rd. and Maplewood Ave., directly across from NJ Transit Maplewood Station, Maplewood, NJ

WHAT: Maplewood New Jersey is hosting its 9th Green Day fair to demonstrate simple ways that every person can make more planet-friendly, sustainable choices in their lives. The fair is a community celebration with live music, how-to demonstrations and eco-vendors, environmental organizations, organic and local food providers and farmers. Green Day offers a variety of events and activities for all ages. “There has never been a better time to come together with others to get energized by the innovative ideas of tomorrow, to engage in the actions of today and to collaborate on solutions for our future,” said Frank McGehee, Maplewood Township Committeeman. Tracey Woods, chair of the Maplewood Green Team said, “The green team is so excited to share our current projects at Green Day, we hope people will take time out to attend the event to learn more about the sustainability options available in our community.”

Highlights include:

  • Demonstrations: sustainable landscaper help desk, eco-mower test drive, backyard composting, chicken raising, growing native plants and vegetables, retrofitting old homes, green cleaning, cold brew coffee and more
  • Delicious organic and local food from restaurants and farms
  • All-electric vehicle (EV) car show with models from Tesla, Toyota and others
  • Live bands all day:  David Easton Band, Mood Ring, Flip da Skrip, Amish Internet, Thea Kearney, Kelly Jin-Hendel and Madison McGehee
  • Green vendors and exhibitors with the latest products and services for a sustainable community
  • “Live Animals of the Rain Forest” presentations by Rizzo’s Reptiles
  • Hands-on science fun with Vinny Voltage
  • High Gear Cyclery providing free bike tune ups. Youth that bring and register their bikes at the event will get a free youth bike helmet provided by the Maplewood Loves Wellness committee and the Maplewood Police Department. Park your bike in the free monitored bike parking
  • Planet-friendly fun activities include face painting, kid’s environmental games, Girl and Boy Scout Troops hands-on learning, art project with Express Yourself Studies and sustainable school projects
  • Maplewood Green Team program presentations: re:Yard for sustainable yard care, Essex Community Energy for resident energy rebates, Adopt a Park Site for local park clean-ups and Green Business registry for local businesses.

WHO:  As part of its year-round effort to promote sustainability in the community, Maplewood Township has a Green Day sustainability fair.  With a long tradition of being a leader in sustainability initiatives, Maplewood uses this event to highlight existing programs, share different ways of reducing one’s environmental impact, and engage and teach residents of all ages. The fair is organized by a volunteer committee made up of members of the Maplewood Green Team and municipal leadership and staff.
