To the Editor:
I write today to add my voice to those encouraging our fellow citizens to re-elect Sheena Collum as Village President. She is a force of nature; one that I’ve watched grow from her term as the President of Seton Hall University’s student body and throughout her years of service to South Orange both as a volunteer and elected official. She has made a major impact on this town and the people who live here – the young, the old and the in-between – often finding outside the box solutions to any given issue.
Having lived in this town for over 40 years, I have seen many Village Presidents come and go. There are two things that make Sheena unique. Her transparency and accessibility are unmatched and she uses social media effectively to that end. She responds to questions openly and honestly and, when confronting issues of power outages, water, and transit, she keeps townspeople appraised of each situation as information comes to her. I have never seen any former VP make themselves available nearly 24/7 to respond to the needs of the citizens and, when away at a conference or on vacation, inform people ahead of time so they understand that an answer to their concern will be forthcoming, but not immediate. Her innate nature is to unite people for a common cause. Whether raising funds for Meals on Wheels, the Rescue Squad and food insecure youth or bringing people together for an impromptu candlelight vigil or sending folks off on buses to raise their voices for a common cause, she is at the forefront of the effort.
As an elected official she has worked tirelessly to be a responsible steward of our tax dollars while maintaining a tax increase below 2% during her 4 years as Village President. Her accomplishments are many and I invite you to review them on her website at https://sheenacollum.com/
Our niece recently attended the 2019 New Jersey State Planning Conference. She called when she returned home and said, “Your mayor is really amazing!” I would have to agree.
