Editor’s Note: An astute reader pointed out that our math was faulty in calculating the total percentage salary increase Maplewood police would receive. We neglected to factor in the effect of compounding, which would bring the total increase to just over 9%. We have edited the body of the article and changed the headline.

The Township of Maplewood and the Maplewood police union have reached a tentative labor agreement that would provide police officers with an 8.75 a 9% salary increase spread out over four years.

The Township Committee voted 4-0 to approve the deal with the Maplewood PBA Local 44A and Local 44 and will be effective January 1, 2016-December 31, 2019. (Committeewoman Kathleen Leventhal was absent.)

“This is a terrific agreement, said Mayor DeLuca at Wednesday’s TC meeting, “and it is in line with our 2% [budget] cap. We thank our officers for their commitment to the town and negotiating in good faith.” DeLuca said this agreement would help guide the township as they go forward with other labor negotiations.

DeLuca singled out Township Administrator Joseph Manning, as well as Police Chief Robert Cimino, for their work in reaching the agreement.

The agreement would provide salary increases as follows:

Year 1: 2%
Year 2: 2%
Year 3: 2.25%
Year 4: 2.50%

Township Committeeman Marlon K. Brownlee thanked the police, who he said “have a tough job in their hands.”
