The Maplewood Police Department held its first “Coffee with a Cop” community event at Prospect Presbyterian Church last night, and a fitting metaphor for the joint church-and-police-hosted event might be that their “cup runneth over” (Psalm 23:5).
Despite the cool damp weather, the turnout was impressive. Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino said he was gratified by the number of citizens — of every age and background — who turned out to meet and greet police officers. Also in attendance: Mayor Vic DeLuca and Prospect Church Pastor Rev. Rick Boyer.
The effort is one of a number of community outreach programs initiated by the Maplewood Police Department, including the Clergy Alliance which brings police and religious leaders from all denominations together for bi-monthly meetings.
Cimino said the police had not yet determined the date for the next Coffee with a Cop, but one thing is certain: There will be another.
