CHS Briefly Evacuated for Smoke From Elevator System

From the South Orange-Maplewood School District:

Columbia High School was briefly evacuated during 1st period (on Monday, April 8, 2019) when smoke was observed coming from the elevator shaft. Students and staff were safely evacuated as a precaution while the fire department investigated.

The Maplewood Fire Department deemed it safe for our return at approximately 8:20AM and the day is now proceeding normally.

The source of the smoke was identified as a small leak in the elevator system. The Long Range Facilities Plan includes a budget for replacing the aging elevator system.

As always, student and staff safety remains a top priority in our district.  We are grateful to the Maplewood Fire Department for their quick response and assistance.
