The annual Newstead 5K benefitting the Achieve Foundation takes place this Saturday, September 19.
And for those who have pre-registered, we have exciting news: the t-shirts are in!
Now in its 13th year, the race has devoted followers, many of whom collect the Newstead 5K t-shirts from year to year. Shirts have ranged in color from purple to red to orange, chartreuse, apple green and colonial blue. This year, the official race t-shirt returns to its original color.
“It’s actually a white t-shirt (running material) with a red logo,” wrote race organizer Helen DuBowy in an email, “to compliment D&I Fitness, which is our presenting sponsor this year.”
Pre-race packet pickup — which includes those t-shirts — is at D&I Fitness (at their new location: 9 West South Orange Avenue, South Orange) on Thursday, September 17 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Friday, September 18 from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Although you probably won’t get a t-shirt, you can still register for the race (the weather forecast is good) in person at D&I Fitness on Thursday between 5 p.m. and 8 pm. and on Friday between noon and 3 p.m. or beginning at 8 a.m. on race day (at 112 Glenview Road, South Orange). Registration for the 5K Race and 2 Mile Walk is $30 beginning September 16. The kids’ fun run is free.
The race day schedule is as follows:
- 8:00 – 8:45 a.m. Race Day Registration/Packet Pickup
- 9:00 a.m.: 5K Race
- 9:05 a.m.: 2 Mile Walk (approximately)
- 10:00 a.m.: Kids’ Fun Run (approximately)
- 10:15 a.m.: Award Ceremony
The race starts and ends at the South Mountain Elementary School Annex, 112 Glenview Rd. Find the race map here or see below.
Annually, the race raises in excess of $20,000 for the Achieve Foundation which promotes exemplary public education in the South Orange-Maplewood School District. This funding, explains DuBowy, allows the Achieve Foundation to “offer students and educators a variety of programs and activities such as teacher grants, tutoring, teacher education, support for STEM education and much, much more.”
