After two and half years of fundraising and planning — and the installation of a hexamid as well as other features — Seth Boyden Demonstration School in Maplewood is moving forward with its Outdoor Learning Center by opening bidding on its long awaited Outdoor Learning Pavilion (see rendering above).
The elementary school is unique in the South Orange-Maplewood School District in that families from throughout South Orange and Maplewood can opt to send their children there to enjoy Seth Boyden’s special Multiple Intelligences learning environment. [However, the school is currently looking at adjusting its mission to include additional demonstration benefits.]
The Outdoor Pavilion will offer a open air space to take learning outdoors. Embracing the concept of Multiple Intelligences, the space has been designed to accommodate both teacher-led instruction and project-based learning. Large industrial tables are suitable for writing, drawing and other “messier” projects. Portable seating will allow for open space for movement and performance.
While many individuals and families in the Seth Boyden community have contributed to the fundraising, the project has also seen widespread support and generosity from throughout the two towns — and beyond: The Rotary Clubs of Maplewood and South Orange, the Woolley Fuel Company and even Tim Gunn of Project Runway gave generously to the project. (Gunn also spoke at one of last year’s Seth Boyden Series events.)
