In 2011, the New Jersey legislature designated the week beginning with the first Monday in October as a “Week of Respect” in New Jersey schools. The designation is a part of the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act.

During the Week of Respect, school communities — including the South Orange-Maplewood School District — work to help students learn about empathy, respect, acceptance, and personal responsibility.

At South Orange Middle School, every member of the community — teachers, students, and staff — wrote messages on three “links” representing the ideas that they are committed to supporting to keep SOMS a respectful environment. The links were joined and carried to Cameron Field.

After a few words from Principal Joseph Uglialoro, a thrilling roar rose up from the students and as they held the chain aloft in a giant circle.
