It was back-to-school for South Orange – Maplewood students this week, and The Village Green had you covered. We made sure you were ready, showed you how to get involved in your PTA/HSAs, and posted your (and our) first day photos.
We also reported on CHS’s drop in the NJ Monthly rankings and how AP and HSPA scores played into it, and looked at how the enrollment “bubble” was affecting the middle schools. Finally, we showcased another private school option in the form of Golda Och Academy.
The other big story of the week was the recent backlash from Maplewoodians after the crackdown on basketball hoops on streets, and the unanimous 5-0 vote from the Maplewood Township Committee to suspend the prohibition.
We also reported on Wyoming Avenue’s scheduled closing for road work beginning September 15.
Sports-wise, former CHS track star Olivia Baker and current track coach Lisa Morgan promoted the upcoming Newstead 5K in a video. The race’s proceeds go to the Achieve Foundation.
Falafel-ly Yours brings a taste of Morocco to South Orange with its new Moroccan menu items, renovations in “a combination of traditional and contemporary Moroccan style” — plus bellydancing.
SOPAC announced new director of development Vivian C.R. James, who replaced Linda Onorevole. Also at SOPAC, Ramsey Lewis, rewnowned jazz composer and pianist, will perform on Saturday, September 13. Not only that, but he will hold a conversation with the audience.
In police news, two burglaries on Elmwood Avenue lead the blotter.
Finally, Essex County will hold its their 13th annual September 11th remembrance on Thursday at the Essex County Eagle Rock September 11th Memorial in the Eagle Rock reservation.
