After eight months of planning, debate and discussion, Maplewood will be striping Parker Avenue for dedicated bike lanes next week.

The Maplewood Township Committee unanimously passed a resolution in July to move forward on installing dedicated bike lanes on Parker Avenue, running from Boyden Avenue to Maplewood Avenue, and awarded a contract for the work in October.

On November 17, the TC passed three ordinances (see below) regulating the bike lanes and parking and permitting in the area.

Township Administrator Patrick Wherry said that NJ American Water’s contractor would be paving Parker Avenue on November 18, between Maplewood Avenue and Prospect Street.

In opening the third ordinance to discussion, Vic De Luca, Chair of the Engineering and Public Works Committee, noted that the three ordinances would “finally establish the Parker Avenue bike lane” and that striping would begin on Nov. 24. De Luca added that concrete work was also “happening now” and that, after the striping, the township would be installing signage.

By the beginning of December, said De Luca, “We should be ready to rock and roll.”
