So When Does School End this Year? SOMSD Clarifies Snow Day Policy

For all those families who got excited a few months ago when they saw the last day of the South Orange-Maplewood 2018-19 school year could be as early as June 18 or 19 — we hope you didn’t get TOO excited.

Because the district has already used 3 out of its allotted 4 emergency closing days (because of snow days), the earliest school will possibly end now is Friday, June 21 (for Grades PreK-7 and 9) and Monday, June 24 (for 8th and 10-12 graders).

This is a change from previous years, when the district would use “give back days” — or days that it doesn’t need for emergency closings — to lengthen Memorial Day weekend.

And if we use another snow (or other emergency closing) day between now and the end of school, classes could extend as later as June 24 or 25, depending on your child’s grade.

One consolation: those last three days of school are all half-days.

On the darker side, if we end up using MORE than the 4 emergency closing days – look for a shorter Spring Break.

Either way, Columbia High School graduation will remain on June 25, regardless of whether or not any Give Back Days are used.

Here’s an email from the district sent on Friday, March 8:

SUBJ: Clarification of End of Year Schedule
Dear SOMSD Families and Staff,
SOMSD is using a new approach for emergency closing days for 2018-2019.

Four emergency closing days are built in to the school year. If we do not use all four emergency closing days, any unused days become “give back days.” The give back days are scheduled for the end of the year (in previous years, give back days were scheduled for Memorial Day weekend). This means that the last day of classes could change, depending on the number of emergency closing days used.

March 4th was the 3rd of the 4 emergency closing days allotted for this year. There are two possible scenarios for the end of the year:

Currently Scheduled

1 Give Back Day

This scenario will take place if:

1 or more additional emergency closing days are used

No more emergency closing days are used

Last Day for Students in Grades PreK-7 and 9:

Monday, June 24th

Friday, June 21st

Last Day for Students in Grades 8 and 10-12:

Tuesday, June 25th

Monday, June 24th

4-Hour Days:

June 21st, 24th and 25th

20th, 21st and 24th

CHS Graduation:

June 25th

June 25th

Note: If SOMSD uses more than the 4 allotted emergency school closings, the first make up day will be April 15, 2019 working forward to April 18, 2019 as needed.
