LARRY HAMM TO LEAD A COMMUNITY ORGANIZING WORKSHOP FOR YOUTH
The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race’s youth group, The Coalition Youth Collective, is hosting a virtual Community Organizing for Youth Workshop led by the incomparable Larry Hamm – Chair of People’s Organization for Progress (POP). This free, virtual event will be held on Wednesday, December 1st from 6-8 PM. Youth are the primary audience for the workshop and all interested middle school, high school and college age students and non-students in South Orange, Maplewood and the surrounding area are invited to participate. Larry will share the basics and real-world tips from his personal experiences over the past 50 years. Following his presentation, participants will be divided into small breakout groups by grade/age level and will be led by youth facilitators in discussing the presentation, identifying ways that they might use what they have heard, and generating questions to ask Mr. Hamm. Finally, all groups will reconvene to direct their questions directly to Mr. Hamm and to hear his closing remarks. Registration is required in advance at https://tinyurl.com/2ydr9ee6.
The Coalition Youth Collective was formed by local students in 2020 with assistance from the Community Coalition on Race. It is intended to provide a platform for SOMA and neighboring youth to have a voice; and to make an impact on social justice and racial equity related issues using the arts and other means of expression. The organization is also intended to provide a supportive environment for local youth to participate in social actions. All youth are welcome.
