The Basics of American Sign Language

For adults and high school students age 14 and up.

This 4-part seminar will guide you through the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) and nonverbal communication. We will cover things like the manual alphabet, basic conversation skills, as well as gestures and storytelling. The class will also touch on topics relating to deaf culture and communication with the deaf and hard of hearing. No registration needed.

Instructor Erin Long, a student of ASL for 4 years, is currently in her final semester of study at Union County College’s American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program while also being a current high school junior at Columbia High School. She had developed and taught classes on Emergency communication with the deaf and hard of hearing to the South Orange Rescue Squad and the UCC EMS students.
